TikTok is unpredictable in a way other platforms aren't. A video you made in ten minutes can reach far beyond your followers by the next morning, and suddenly you have hundreds of comments asking "price?", "where to buy?" and "deliver in Pokhara?"
That's a good problem, but it's still a problem. If nobody answers, the attention fades as fast as it arrived. This guide covers what small businesses can automate on TikTok and how to set things up before a video takes off.
Why TikTok inboxes are different
On Instagram or Facebook, most buyers already follow you. On TikTok, many of the people commenting have never heard of you. That changes a few things:
- Volume comes in bursts. Quiet for weeks, then a flood over two days.
- Questions are basic. People don't know your prices, location or how to order.
- Comments matter more than DMs. Many viewers comment rather than message, and other viewers read those comments.
- Attention is short. The video will stop being shown in a few days. Replies after that reach almost nobody.
So the goal on TikTok is speed and clarity: answer the basic questions fast, everywhere they're asked, and give people one clear way to buy.
What you can automate (and what depends on access)
TikTok's business messaging tools and API access have been expanding, but availability differs by country, account type and approval status at the time of writing. Before you plan, check what your account actually supports, or ask your provider to confirm.
Where it's available, the useful pieces are:
- AI replies to DMs. Answering price, stock, delivery and payment questions from your own product information.
- Comment replies. Short, friendly public replies to common questions, so other viewers see the answer too.
- Comment-to-DM style follow-ups. Where the platform allows it, inviting commenters to a private chat with the details.
- Keyword triggers. "Comment SIZE and we'll send the size chart" style campaigns.
- Handoff to a person. For anything the bot shouldn't handle.
If messaging automation isn't available for your account yet, you can still prepare: pin a comment with the price and how to order, put contact details in your bio, and route buyers to WhatsApp, Messenger or your website where automation is available.
Prepare before the video goes viral
The worst time to set up is while a video is blowing up. Do this in advance.
Write your top ten answers
Look at past comments and list the questions. For most product businesses, they're the same:
- How much?
- Where are you located?
- Do you deliver to my city?
- How do I order?
- Is it available in other colours or sizes?
- Cash on delivery?
- Is it original?
- How long does delivery take?
- Is there a discount?
- Can I see more photos?
Write a short, clear answer for each. These become the core of your bot's knowledge, or your team's copy-paste replies.
Decide where the sale happens
TikTok is often the discovery step, not the checkout. Decide where you want buyers to go: a TikTok DM chat, WhatsApp, your website, or a shop listing if TikTok Shop is available in your market. Then be consistent. "DM us", "WhatsApp us" and "visit our site" in three different comments confuses people.
Plan for language
TikTok comments are informal. Expect slang, spelling mistakes, emoji and mixed language. In Nepal, you'll see a lot of Romanized Nepali ("kati ho?", "kaha bata order garne?"). In the Gulf, Arabic and English mixed together. In India, Hinglish. Your replies, automated or not, need to read the way people write. See our guide to Romanized Nepali chatbots for what that looks like in practice.
Public comment replies: keep them short and human
Public replies are seen by everyone who opens the comments, so they double as marketing. A few rules:
- Keep them to one or two lines.
- Answer the actual question. "Rs 1,800, free delivery in the valley" is better than "Check DM!"
- Don't paste the exact same reply fifty times in a row. Vary the wording; it looks less robotic and is less likely to read as spam.
- Never argue in public. Move complaints to a private conversation and a person.
AI comment replies can help here, because they can vary wording naturally and pick up what the comment actually asked.
What to keep human
Even on a fast-moving platform, some things shouldn't go to a bot:
- Complaints about orders or quality
- Negative comments that need judgement
- Collaboration and influencer requests
- Wholesale or reseller enquiries
- Anything involving a refund
A good setup flags these for a person, with the original comment or chat attached. For complaints specifically, see handling complaints in DMs.
A scenario
Say you make handmade candles in Lalitpur and post a short video of a new scent. It travels further than usual. By morning there are a few hundred comments, most asking price and delivery, some asking if you ship to India, and a couple of people saying their last order arrived broken.
With preparation, the routine questions get short public answers and, where available, a private message with the price list and how to order. The international shipping question gets an honest answer from your policy. The two broken-order comments get a polite public reply asking them to check their DMs, and go straight to you with the details. You spend your morning packing orders instead of typing the same answer two hundred times.
Mistakes to avoid
- Relying on unofficial tools that ask for your TikTok password. Use official integrations only.
- Posting a product without having price and ordering info ready.
- Sending people to a link that's broken or slow on mobile.
- Ignoring comments after day two. Late commenters are still potential buyers.
- Promising stock you don't have. Viral demand can empty your shelves fast, so keep stock information current.
Bringing TikTok into the same inbox
Orbit connects TikTok, where your account supports it, alongside Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and your website chat, so a viral video doesn't mean a separate app to babysit. See how TikTok DM automation works, or book a demo and we'll check what's available for your account and show it handling real questions from your videos.

Is TikTok DM automation available in every country?
Not always. TikTok's business messaging features and API access have rolled out gradually and vary by region and account type. Check what's available for your account, or ask your provider to confirm before you plan around it.
Should I reply to TikTok comments publicly or in DMs?
Both have a place. A short public reply shows other viewers you are responsive. Details like exact price, delivery and ordering usually work better in a private message or on a channel where you can complete the order.
